Wieland is hiring a Process Engineer. The Process Engineer will be responsible for supporting our improvement in shredding, sorting, melting, smelting, casting, packaging, and other manufacturing processes. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals who are passionate about process improvement, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration. You will work closely with senior engineers and operations teams to support training initiatives, document best practices, and contribute to focused process improvement efforts across all manufacturing areas.  Contribute as a team member to the achievement of strategic objectives of the Company, while focusing on living the core values. This role is located in Shelbyville, KY and will be fully on-site. 

Responsibilities

Process Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Assist in documenting and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and training materials with Operations, EHS, and Quality teams.
  • Support the development of training content and help facilitate upskilling of operations staff. Lead the effort for organizational learning of key technical concepts and competencies in copper shredding, sorting, smelting, and casting.
  • Engage team members across the facility in offices and on the shop floor to promote awareness of the process goals, generate good will between teams, and find opportunities to create value.
  • Create and maintain process flow diagrams, visual work instructions, and layout documentation.
  • Extract, transform, and analyze production data using Excel and other data tools to identify trends, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities. Advanced data analytical tools may be necessary.
  • Execute self-directed, focused process improvement projects, supporting root cause analysis, data collection, and implementation tracking.
  • Shadow and support senior engineers in equipment evaluations, training initiatives, vendor communications, and product/equipment trials.
  • Help track and report key performance indicators (KPIs) related to yield, quality, and throughput.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying small wins and sharing insights with the broader team.
  • Demonstrate to team members and reinforce for team members the need to understand the “why” behind standard operating procedures for our manufacturing process.

Process Engineer Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Materials, Chemical, or Process Engineering, or a related technical field or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Work experience 0-2 years.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, charts, formulas); experience with PowerPoint and Word for documentation and storytelling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in translating technical information for non-technical audiences.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, energetic, and comfortable working both independently and in team settings.
  • Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or Value Stream Mapping concepts is a plus, and training will be encouraged.
  • Familiarity with basic statistics and data visualization; experience with tools like Minitab, Power BI, or Python is a bonus.
  • Flexible working hours with a base salary plus annual bonus. Also eligible for overtime when working off-shift or split-shift schedules. Actual schedule to be negotiated with the supervising engineer.
  • Must be a Team Player and able to communicate effectively across all layers of the organization (corporate, metal purchasing, environmental, sustainability, plant management, laboratory, engineering, shop floor, yard, dock)
  • Strong interpersonal, cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a practical “can-do” attitude are expected.
  • Must want to work in “hands-on” situations and apply “book knowledge” and “logic” towards real-world solutions.
